FAQ

What does Pacific Sámi Searvi do?

Pacific Sámi Searvi is a nonprofit cultural association. PSS hosts exhibits, educational displays and classes, films, talks, and social gatherings, while advocating for the rights of Sámi and other Indigenous peoples. Our mission is to honor, cultivate, and expand understanding of Sámi culture, heritage, and contemporary issues.

What does Searvi mean?

Searvi means “society” or “association” in Northern Sámi (Davvisámegiella).

Do I have to live in the Pacific Northwest to join?

No! While we are headquartered in the Pacific Northwest (specifically Seattle, WA - Duwamish Land) and most of our in person events are held there, we welcome folks from all over to join and participate in our online community and events.

Do I have to be Sámi to join?

No! We take our cue from other Sámi Associations, such as NSR, who do not require their members to be Sámi. We just ask that you share our mission.

How do I join?

You can start by becoming a member here.

How can I become involved?

We are so happy you asked! If you are interested in lending your skills and talents to a committee, let us know via email and we will get you in touch with the appropriate committee chair.

I want to join the board, how can I do that?

If you are interested in becoming a board member, please send us an email with your resume and letter of interest attached. Our board terms are 3 year commitments, and board members can serve 2 consecutive terms. When a board seat opens, we will contact interested applicants with skills that would fill needed roles in our organization.

I have heard that I may have Sámi ancestry, can you help me figure that out?

PSS is a small, volunteer run organization with limited resources, and we currently do not have the capacity to provide one on one assistance with family research.

We encourage our members to connect with their heritage, find their ancestors, and get in touch with their living relatives in the community here and in Sápmi. We have resources in our Cyberlavvu to help you navigate your journey.

What is the Cyberlavvu?

A lavvu is a dwelling made of several forked and straight poles covered in hides or other material, designed for a nomadic lifestyle. Our Cyberlavvu references this dwelling, creating a gathering place for our members online, accessible from wherever you are.

I took a DNA test and the results said that I have “Sámi DNA”. Does that mean I am Sámi? Were my ancestors Sámi?

No DNA test can determine whether or not you or your ancestors are Sámi. DNA can not determine you or your ancestors’ relationship to culture. A DNA test may give you a starting point to begin researching your family’s cultural heritage, by giving you an idea of where they may have lived. DNA may also help you find living relatives.

Does Pacific Sámi Searvi have a physical location or office?

No, PSS does not have a physical location or office at this time. We host our in-person events throughout the Seattle area and Pacific Northwest at a number of different venues.
